Palladio's Rubik

Althea Chan

Le Corbusier's Villa Stein de Monzie is simply put, the very epitome of his Five Points of Architecture, with all walls being entirely non load bearing, with ribbon windows encircling the entire structure, and a space for rooftop gardens. Its pillar grid follows a 2:1:2:1:2 spacing, hence being likened to that of Palladio's Renaissance villas such Villa Foscari.

Unlike Villa Savoye which has been preserved wholly in its original state, the current Villa Stein de Monzie has been split into four different units, much like an apartment building. The current inhabitants of Villa Stein are known to be relatively high profile, and hence the extension seeks to provide for an extra outhouse, function space and living quarters for any guests, respectfully far enough away from the main building, hence bringing use to the garden too.

The outhouse seeks to repurpose existing underutilized infrastructure in the garden and to create a sheltered space for the use of any guests or residents of the Villa Stein. The pattern in the walls draws inspiration from the Maison du Bresil, another project that Le Corbusier had worked on, while also echoing the works of Piet Mondrian in the way the rectangular forms are organized on the walls.

The Corbusier portion of the studio sought to teach each student to see architecture as an art form rather than mere building, and as a result encouraged us to produce our own paintings. The forms derived as a result of the superimposition of 4 levels of floor plans on top of each other shows Corbusier's quirkiness in creating his floor plans as a result of not having any load bearing walls whatsoever, and the chaotic organization of the spaces within the main house, to encapsulate the thought of each building as a machine, as a machine of parts, and the busy interactions of the inhabitants within the space.
