Hong Kong’s dense urban housing, poor waste management and poor carbon reduction measures are social and environmental issues that Hong Kong face on a daily basis. Despite its social and environmental unsustainability, Hong Kong is ranked 9th globally on the ARCADIS Sustainable Cities Index 2018 due to its high economic sustainability.
This thesis aims to study this urban contradiction in Hong Kong and propose an alternative architectural model to its social and environmental issues. This model identifies the issues from an ecological standpoint from which a design framework is formulated. Generative design adopting Multi-Objective Optimzation (MOO) is utilized for resolving the complexity of the framework to achieve a dense and sustainable vertical urban ecosystem.
