Divergent
Chloe Liang Xiuling
Located right in the middle of the cultural heart of Singapore, the project site is surrounded by huge neo-classical museums, while facing an extremely modern skyline of museums and the CBD. As a satellite branch of the Museum of Modern Art, the salient point to the project was to bridge the gap between these two stylistic extremes.
Inspired by the rigidity of neo-classical styles, the design developed into a simple silhouette of four arms emerging from a shared base. This was then warped and bent to create diverging paths that point toward the riverside, framing views of the downtown skyline. Large swinging walls offer a purposely flexible interior to create open areas for larger exhibitions and experiences, but conversely too can offer a more intimate space if necessary.
