Shared Living for The Floating Population

Chan Li Yu | Mentor: Michael Budig

Exponential population growth, geographical mobility and economic fluidity have caused high dense cities to face acute housing shortages and even challenge to home ownership. This propose an alternative shared living through the adaptive reuse of abandoned factory and warehouse. This future mode of urban habitation targets the floating population, forming part of the goverment’s strategy to redistribute population and decentralise urban centers.

China is faced with an internal migration crisis and its subsequent urban overpopulation in big cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. Majority of the floating population are fresh graduates who move into big city for better job prospects. Currently, among the 250 million internal migrants, more than 60% of them do not possess a household registration which denied them of any housing privileges associated with the internal citizenship. They are often marginalised and are deemed as ‘alien’ by the locals in their own country.

The structural skeletal of factory and warehouse remains and becomes the foundation for the high-rise timber framework. The timber structures are based in a 3 x 3 grid, growing vertically upwards to accomodate the dynamic population. This living space becomes the converging point of people from different background, giving them a sense of home and a flexible lifestyle. People can customise their unit by controlling the amount of privacy and storage they need, and then proceed to choose their preferred 9-units based community.
