Meandering
Odelia Shane Tan Jia Xuan & Sally Tan Jie Ying
Located on the northern part of the Orang Utan Haven, in a valley with steep topography
and swampy areas that were formerly rice fields, a low-rise research centre extends from
the existing ecotrail and sinuously meanders on the undulated terrain. With the research
centre focusing mainly on ecosystem research, the adopted design strategy aims to reflect its function in its form. As the building winds around the existing trees on-site, it adds to and enhances the ecosystem of the valley. The serpent-like construction was also designed to integrate architecture into the landscape; extending the existing topography to create spaces for exhibition and research, living and working.
A strong linear exhibition flow makes up the main circulation - Territorial research to Open labwork to Multipurpose area - and as visitors are slowly guided through the series of spaces, they will gain a deeper insight on the importance of scientific ecosystem research. Transitioning between each exhibition space are open areas that allow for interactions with plants and birds. Overall, the openness of the centre hopes to encourage exploration within visitors, interaction between researchers and visitors and foster an interest in engaging in tropical rainforest conservations with minimal impact done to the site.
