RE: defining Yangon's Airport

Chia Shengwei

RE: envisions a future where Yangon thrives on waste processing to recover materials and energy from waste, with the international airport integrating its infrastructure with that of waste management facilities.

As the gateway into the country, the hybrid airport serves an economical and educational purpose to craft a more sustainable future for its people. The mixing of the programmes seeks to intertwine one with the other and creates unique moments where the boundaries between programmes are blurred. Simultaneously, the same structure serves a dual function for both the airport and the waste management plant, optimizing resources. Designing with modularity and the future in mind, the airport utilizes the recovered materials to grow and expand.

Analysis of existing Material Recovery Facilities and Waste to Energy Plants as well as airport circulation systems revealed opportunities for the programmes to be interweaved to maximize the usage of infrastructure and achieve the goal of making processes visible. A graphic imagery of the country’s consumption habits and that of the international community is thus painted within the airport, while at the same time serving to showcase to the world, Yangon’s potential and commitment to be an efficient waste processing hub.
