Re-Thinking Airports: Integrating the Urban Farming Experience
Tan Gee Yang
The brief calls for the rethinking of the airport and its relationship to the city, assuming the inexistence of the current airport serving the city.
Due to urban sprawl and future developments, agricultural land is slowly being eroded in Hanoi, Vietnam by new developments. Agriculture remains an integral aspect of Vietnam’s GDP and Hanoi is a major contributor towards that. Hence, the concept of the project was to integrate urban farming into the airport experience such that the airport becomes a statement to encourage the shift from traditional farming to more sustainable and high-tech methods. Urban farming is integrated into the circulation spines of the airport as well as exhibition zones serving as gathering nodes. A “Farm to table” concept is introduced where the produce harvested would go into the F&B shops serving the airport.
